I think that I will be writing about Myspace. I chose this because I feel like Myspace has more controversy than Facebook. You always here about Myspace causing problems, but I also believe that Myspace will be easier to write about because it involves more younger kids than Facebook or any other online community does.
I think my main argument will be about if it is a good idea for young teens to use myspace or would it be better for them to just stay off of the website in general until they realize that sexual predators are out there and they will do whatever it takes for you to let them in.
MySpace is a great topic, but go back and look at the assignment sheet again. It asks you to analyze a technology rather than building a general argument about it. So, thinking about things like commonplaces and the use of visuals, what sort of argument can you build about the way folks on MySpace use language (written, visual, video, etc) within the community?
ReplyDeleteThink about what the kinds of communications on MySpace say about the group. What do people on MySpace value? Why are they there? What do they hope to get from being in the space?
Why don't you send me a new thesis via my WebCT email once you have consulted the assignment sheet again and maybe spent some time looking over MySpace?

I think that you could make a strong argument about MySpace, especially in the way profiles can be personalized which helps users to create identities. Also, since there are tons of tweens and teens on MySpace you could research their values and language. There is also a large music aspect to MySpace so maybe if you run out of ideas you could also turn to that, because music can be a specific part of the language of MySpace.
ReplyDeleteMyspace is a good topic for this. I do think that myspace might just be over used. I am not saying don't do but maybe just make sure that you like narrow it down to maybe somehting that wont be common. It does have a lot more younger kids then face book and you really do hear about myspace causing more problems then facebook. Overall, writing about myspace will make a strong essay. Goodluck.
