Logos, Pathos, Ethos

Logos- using a logical aspect of advertising. Making the consumer realize why they need this or want this product.
Ethos- using
Pathos- the use of emotion to capture a consumer and draw them in.

I think for many advertising companies they must use all three to make a good commercial.  To me the most important of these is the pathos aspect.  This is used for many commercials and I believe that it really captures a person and makes them watch the whole thing.

The bud light commercial that I have chosen, to me, is kind of hard to find ethos, pathos, and logos.  I think the one that sticks out the most is the Pathos.  They are using comedy to get there point across that Bud Light is the beer to drink.  Logos is somewhat present because they are taking 5 normal guys and giving them a Bug Light and it turns into a whole conversation saying the word "wassup," but all in all it is a very catchy commercial.

My second commercial, E*Trade, I think is a decent commercial.  They are using both Logos and Ethos in a way that it is talking about stocks and different bonds and they brought in Mellody Hobson.  She is famous for her financial advise and owing her own investment firm.  Bringing celebrities in is always a good way to get the attention of viewers.  Also, this commercial is using Pathos in many different areas.  They are using comedy with one of the babies that is trying to impress Mellody.  Also, I think that they use babies in this commercial because it is trying to make stocks and trading look like it is easy.  Many people become so frustrated with investments and different areas of stocks and banking that E*Trade is trying to make people realize that it really can be as easy to understand.

  1. Hey Pamela-
Both the ads you were thinking of seem really good. I think that ethos is the toughest appeal to define and spot but probably one of the most popular. For example, I think the Bud Light ad probably uses sort of unspoken ethos through name recognition. As the "King of Beers" Budwiser's name is recognizable and trustworthy. Ethos is strategy of building an argument by first building the character of the writer, designer, company being advertised.
